When we return to the fabulous and precocious world of Jane Quimby (Erica Dasher) in ABC Family’s breakout series Jane By Design this summer, two months have passed for the aspiring fashionista. Starting to struggle a bit more at school but still strive for more responsibility at her “internship,” Jane is overwhelmed by a lot of things. And Billy’s (Nick Roux) return may make or break just how she can handle her ever-evolving crazy life.
When Billy gets out of juvie in “The Replacement,” he is a seemingly softer, quieter Billy than how we came to fall in love with him last. He takes his time away, and the differences that he returns to in a mature stride that is both inspirational and also a little worrisome. Since we didn’t get to spend the last two months with him, we can’t help but wonder if this new “zen” like zone is legit— or if he’s bound to just break down later. Maybe he really has moved on from Lulu (Meagan Tandy), but he is pushing aside feelings for Jane, too. Avoidance comes first— of the “It’s you” he smiled at her, but also of helping her in general. He wants to just put his head down and get through school without getting sucked into her messy life. Naturally, though, the good guy gene in him rears its adorable head and won’t let him stay away for too long, though.
